I live outside of the USA in a small third world country. My 8 year old daughter was just diagnosed Bipolar/ADHD. We’ve known about the bipolar diagnosis for a while and believe it to be the dominant force. She is having a really hard time learning to read and can barely sound out three letter words (still can’t remember some letter sounds). When I got the diagnosis for ADHD I’m thinking that maybe that is the reason she is not learning to read. That is, my teaching method is not the correct one she needs in order to read. I was thinking she might have a learning/reading disability. We will be travelling in three weeks to the capital city where we have scheduled testing for reading disabilities. I am still trying to figure out what I need to do. I have spent the last three days (since we got the diagnosis) on the internet trying to educate myself so that I can better help her. The internet is pretty much my main resource for help since there are no public libraries here. My husband and I will continue to meet with the psychologist (we are looking for a pediatric psychiatrist for dealing with meds) for help in parenting.
My reason for posting is this. I have a relative that will be travelling to the States in June and I’d like her to bring me back some resource books. She is very limited in what she can bring so I can only get a couple of books. Can anyone offer some suggestions? I’m not looking for books that explain ADHD because that information can be obtained on the internet. I’m looking for something that will help me be able to adapt our homeschooling to her needs. What are the best methods for teaching a child with ADHD? Is there one really definitive book that helps with this? I’d appreciate any help I can get.
the book most often recommended on these boards for teaching a struggling reader is Reading Reflex. You can read more about it on the commercial web bookstores like amazon.com.
