the school system

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi! I am a mother of an 13 year old boy and we have gone round and round with the school …He has dyslexia and the school has refused to help him …He has an IEP all that is to this school is a peice of paper they fill out once a year and then file it. So I took them to due process and won the panel has decided he wasn’t getting a free and appropriate education..What did the school do? APPEAL the decision. But mean while during all of this my childs IEP was in stay put…And the school decided they needed to have an IEP meeting I refused to go since the decision was due out in 7 days..Now we are in stay put so I have not agreed to the new IEP and they are now informing me if I don’t go along with the new IEP they will keep him in 6th grade..Even though he has passed. Is there any thing I can do?

I have a 13 year old daughter who has dyslexia/dyscalculia. We were at out wits ends when my oldest did her SATs in Year 2 (we live in England) she did badly in that exam and it proved it. We had her assessed privately cost us £150 then!! anyway it was the best money I have ever spent they had to do something then….. although now she is in secondary school she gets a lot of help. Primary School was useless….. don’t give up get him assessed and they should give him lots of help…. he will get snowed down otherwise and will not achieve there is a specialist way learning with dyslexics…. she also has private lessons with a tutor for her maths…. Good luck just keep on putting it all down in writing speak to your Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator at the school otherwise if you get no joy with headteacher then chair of governors then senator if you wish! Good luck.

Welcome Judi.

Because of the terminagoly you used, I assume you are in the US. I recommend you contact your federally funded Parent Training Center. Use this map to find the one nearest you.

http://www.taalliance.org/centers/index.htm
Each one is independent and the services and qualitly of service varies greatly but its a place to start. They should be able to meet with you to discuss the law and your options. Or they might have hand outs.

Document, document, document. Keep notes on meeting and confirm phone calls. Now, if they do retain him, they have just cut their own throats since that, in essesance, says the IEP was inadequet. But I hope it doesn’t come to that. You need him to continue to the seventh grade, not repete sixth with better services.

Good luck.

PS 13 is rather old for sixth grade. Was he previously retained?
