Can anyone help me with my math problems?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

My name is Shane.I am 21 years old and I have finished Hish School.

The reasion I am posting on this forum is that I need help with a math problem that I have. I am LD and I never did so well in high school when it came to the basics of mathmatics. the best grade I ever had in algebra was a 78. Keep in mind that this was just pre algebra.

I have been out of school for more than a year now but I really want to go to College.

I do not have to worrie about how much it will cost and all of that becouse I am also Legaly blind and the state of texas will exempt me of paying for this education.

this is a great thing not having to pay for going to college but i feel that the mathmatics are a brick wall to the door of opportunity.

Is there anyone out there that would be willing to work with me and see if there is any way that I can get past this brick wall keeping me from getting a degree?

I am so happy that I was able to find this site. God willing there will be someone who reads this who specializes in Mathmatic LD.

I thank you for your time in reading this post.

It is difficult to do math at a distance and you should also look for in-person help. The college probably has a tutoring center; see if you can find a qualified person to help. Be cautious of peer tutors who may have barely passed the class themselves.

Welp, our peer tutors at least have to have passed the courses *well* :-) Actually, it’s as much a hazard to get a math tutor to whom it came so easily that they don’t know how to break it down and/or explain it. They tend to just “show you how it’s done” — and end up doing most of it for you. Unfortunately they can’t help with the tests (and it can create a false impression that you just don’t know it “when it’s on a test,” when no, actually, you don’t *know* it, that well, period.)

There’s a *lot* of difference between instructors at colleges. It can make or break you. I’ve tutored people in Dr. M’s courses who have ended up dropping it… and I *know* if they’d had Ms. C, they’d have been fine. WE’ve got some advisors who know where to steer folks to, and some who don’t.
I think getting a good advisor (or ally of some kind) inside the system is critical. The trick is finding somebody who both means well and knows the inside scoop; you want to find somebody who *isn’t* overwhelmed with a huge caseload if you can :-)

But you can always bring questions & what have you here!
