Child having difficulty learning letter names

Last week I started working with five kindergartners who did not pass the PALS (Phonological Wareness Literacy Screening). I have only worked on the letters M, S and B. We’ve spent a lot of time on the letter M. I was reviewing these letters with each child and one of the girls told me the letter M was the letter M. Good, so far. Then she told me that the letter S was the letter M. She also told me that the letter B was the letter M.

Two of the children are way ahead of the others. The other two knew what the three letters were. I do not know why this other girl is having so much difficulty.

Sorry to see they are so concerned about names of letters at this point. Eventually children need to learn them but I don’t think it helps early reading skills, in fact may work against them.
