Hello,
My daughter is 16 years old. She was just tested in school by the school physcigolost (sp) He told me he cannot understand how she ever made it this far through her education.. He said her IQ was borderline at 70 or 75 (I think) to have a learning disability. She has a severe disability in math but her reading is pretty good almost her grade level.
My son is 13 and he was diagnosed at 7 with LD/ADHD. His symptoms were way different than hers. He could not read…but his math was fine….and very hyper.
My daughter I did not recognize what was happening. She was none of what he was like. Not hyper, she read very well. When I would ask her if she had homework (math) she said it was done, she would use a calculator a lot….The school said they were able to use calculators. She hid this VERY WELL…Until recently….in highschool it caught up with her…
I feel like it is my fault for not seeing this….. My question is I want her out of that school system…They never told me in all these years that they thought there was a problem. Now, the school board is saying (public) good luck getting her other educational placement…It will not happen because she is in high school… My son was severely LD and in 4 grade they put him in a private school (LD).
Why is it different for her because she is in high school. I asked for an IEP meeting review with her counsoler and the LD Head of the school district for private placement with my son…his school is 1-12 grades….
please help…..
Sally
Re: New Here...Need Help....
Any chance you can get her privately evaluated? If so, definitely do it. If her brother has LD and ADHD, the chances that she does as well certainly are increased, but you need a lot more information than you have to be sure. Also, do you know her brother’s IQ? Siblings are usually within 10 points of each other on such tests. If his is dramatically different, then it may be that her testing is incorrect. Is it possible she is depressed? That can artificially lower IQ scores. An LD or ADHD can also affect IQ testing. Do you have subtest scores? That might show where the problems are coming from. What problems led to the recent testing? What has changed enough for a concern to arise. This really makes me think about possible depression. Finally, many bright children with LD and ADHD are able to successfully hide and compensate for their problems. Often, however, they come to a point when the burden becomes too much and they experience anxiety and depression.
I would question that IQ rating if she reads very well. IQ tests are not always accurate evaluations. She should be re-tested in much more depth.

If the school is dragging its feet on placement or help, be polite but dig in your feet and keep asking. And do everything in writing, with saved copies for the record.
