SAT revision and how it affects our kids

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m concerned about the changes to the SAT and how this affects our LD children. I’ve discussed with our school counselor, and she says The College Board doesn’t make accommodations just for LD schools and actually won’t listen to us.

I’m hoping LD Online could be persuasive on this issue, as well as possibly the Schwab family, Rick, etc. How can we get help here?

Look at www.collegeboard.com for information on how to obtain accomodations. In brief, you’ve got to have a recent evaluation showing LD or ADHD and you have to show that the accomodation you are requesting is one that the student is already receiving in school and has been for some time. This is meant to prevent fortuitously -timed diagnoses of kids who just want the extra time. A child in an LD school should not have difficulty establishing eligibility for accomodations. The main issue right now is whether typing will be available for the essay portion of the new SAT.

Thanks for the info. I looked at their website yesterday and saw that they have a section for learning disabilities. I was relieved to see that they can have a reader and scribe. My child attends an LD, laptop school, so the typing (spellcheck) issue is a big concern as well.

What kind of lobbying effort is going on from LD Online, and what other resources can be corraled to help? I’m wondering specifically about the OWL Foundation, and possibly the Schwab family.

Thanks.
