Has anyone used the Bob Books in early reading?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was checking out ebay the other night and saw little sets of Bob Books. Has anyone tried using these with a beginning reader? They say they have words of three letters through the whole story and introduce just a few letters and sounds at a time. Thanks.

I have not used the Bob books, although many homeschoolers do use them with their young children. In my opinion, most older children will find them insulting to their intelligence.

There is a *wonderful* set of very graduated readers that I can recommend. Just have the child read a story with two mistakes or less before having him move on to the next story. If in doubt, start with Set 1. These readers *seem* very easy, but they are carefully designed to stimulate decoding skills and fluency.

I just realized the website is a little confusing. What you want to be looking at for an early reader is the “Little Books” Sets 1 through 8. The other materials are for children who have already completed the little books or are reading at a higher level (beginning 3rd grade level or so). The “Little Books” are $30 per set (plus a little more for shipping).

Bob books are fine little regular readers — they’re not designed for kids with dyslexia, though, so they aren’t as structured. But if the price is good they’re a good resource to have around.

I have used Bob books in the past in my classroom. I am a teacher and a mom. I also work for Study Dog. It is a FREE online program for early readers. The lessons are very systematic and explicit. The kids find the characters and their adventures very engaging. This would be a great program to use at home or in the classroom. Whether you want to teach young children to read or help those struggling readers. I think your child would enjoy this program.

Take a look and let me know what you think.
