need evaluator for an IEE in math for dyslexic 7th grader

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

HELP!

my middle school child is severely dyslexic and while he has gotten good private reading remediation over the last 4-5 years (privately, totally at my expense), he is quite a few years behind in math. he is not getting the concepts and has been in special ed for math since 2nd grade (currently on an early 4th grade level at best). he is frustrated and has developed a psychological block that says i can’t do math at all.

in addition to resource room for math all these years, he has had a private math tutor for 5th and part of 6th grade and also did 100 hours in the lindamood bell on cloud nine math program last summer.

my school district has agreed to pay for an independent educational evaluation in math only - we have plenty of testing and results of remediation for reading - so just need someone to evaluate him in math and make strong recommendations of what he needs. i strongly feel this evaluator should really understand dyslexia as that is his primary disability.

the problem is i cannot find anyone to do this eval.i have called my local ida branch - no help; and have called over 12 people locally plus some who did not call back.

i had an evaluator lined up who even did two testing sessions, but he just bowed out saying our situation is “too complex”.

i am hoping to find someone through this board who can do this independent eval for me. i live in the denver, CO area and my son and i will be in southern and central california (l.a. area and san luis obispo area) this summer.

any of those locations work for a person willing to do an IEE in math only? and not be afraid or intimitaded by the public school system so that a strong, objective recommendation can be made for this struggling child?

thank you.

Since it sounds like you will be up in SLObispo ask the Lindamood’s for a recommendation. IT sounds like he needs a speech assessment in regards to his KNOWLEDGE of math concepts…That is probably the crux of the issue…he doesn’t have the concepts in his vocabulary…

Oh wow, by all means get an appointment right away with Lindamood-Bell if you are goign to be in SLO! They are one of the few places that understands math disorders and the relationship to concept imagery.

I may have answered you on another thread if you posted twice, but assessing the math is really not what you need (although the person doing the remediation would want to know the weaknesses). A good math eval does not help when the teachers do not understand HOW to remediate a math disorder.

The only other program that I know of that seems to be based on the same principles as Lindamood-Bell is Making Math Real which is also located in California.

Finding someone local who can teach these methods will be the problem.

thanks for your response Janis.

Yes, i accidentially posted this same topic two times! you did respond on the other post with the same name.

in regards to lindamood bell:

~~~They are one of the few places that understands math disorders and the relationship to concept imagery. ~~~
actually, i have found the opposite to be true. they have what looks like a good math program, on cloud nine, but i have found that it is limited to the visual imagery only. it is not a “complete” math program, nor does it take a student from step a to step b etc in math and math skills. on cloud nine works hand in hand with the lmbell V.V. program to get students to visualize numbers and the concepts of numbers. it goes up through fractions, i believe.
my son did 100 hours in the on cloud nine program last summer. at the slo clinic (lmbell headquarters). i found that the staff were discouraging us from doing this program with him. we had hoped to do it on a previous visit to the clinic and were talked out if by the staff.
lmbell does not do any extensive math testing(evaluations) before or after on cloud nine. they use the one arthmitec score from a test whose name i cannot remember right now.
i am not prepared to pay for more hours of on cloud nine after my son completed 100 last summer. we did not see the progress we had hoped and it did not really carry over to his regular OR special ed math classes. this was disappointing.
i do not think lmbell knows math, at least not anywhere near how they KNOW reading. this is a given and has worked great for both of my dyslexic sons.
i am looking for someone else to do a math eval - not lmbell, as they donot do math evals. - and to make strong recommendations of what my soon to be 8th grader needs in math.
