phsycoeducational evaluation

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile, i guess i’ve been lucky with my son… now 16 (17 next month) as things in school have been going quite well.

Now that he’s a junior, I’m trying to educate myself on some of the bumps in the road ahead to college. I remember reading somewhere that most colleges require a specific evaluation to receive services. That having an IEP as a senior just doesn’t cut it. I’ve been researching these forums (and the site), and can’t find anything specific on the topic. I’m thinking it has to be here somewhere! ;)

Is Phsycoeducational Evaluation the proper term? He had a 3 year re-evaluation on April of 2005, is this one in the same? For the evaluation, he did take the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children IV and Kaufman Test of Ednl. Achievment II (K-TEA II).

I just want to be sure he doesn’t need additional testing before it’s to late.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just happened to talk to a college LD support person recently and asked some of these same ?’s.

She said they need an comprehensive eval within 4 years for LD and, I believe, 2 yrs for ADHD. Diff colleges may be diff, though.

Call a couple of local colleges and see what they say. I think most offer support for our kids and should be able to guide you.

We always tried to schedule big triennial tests in the junior or senior year so the information would be pertinent; most colleges prefer two years or less and some will take three. It also helps, of course, to have college issues included in the report.
Calling some colleges’ disability centers is the best way to find out the specific policies.

Look online on web sites for colleges your son might be interested in. Most have information on the documentation that is needed. Here is an example: http://www.goddard.edu/student/LD.html

Most of the ones I’ve looked at seem to request the adult IQ test not the children’s version. We put off my own son’s three-year evaluation until this year so that he would have the WAIS. Once you’ve found the information online for a college of interest contact them and ask if the IQ test must be the adult version. If you go to the google seach page and select more and select University Search you can easily search college web sites.

Thanks everyone for the help! I’ll check with a couple colleges he’s considering. And, i’ll have to double check how they go by the “2 years”. Is it at the time of the application, when they would start school, etc.. He would be JUST past the 2 year guideline at graduation (2 months). :(

Thanks again for all your suggestions!
