Hi. I have a 7 yr old daughter who is in first grade. We are pretty sure already that she is going to be retained this year. She is getting an average of about 20% across the board in all subjects. The school tested her earlier this year, and nothing came of it. She has improved since school started this year though. For example she started out just scribbling on her spelling test and other work. She is now attempting to spell the words on her test, and may get 3 or 4 correct now. She is still struggling with everything, writing, reading, spelling, even math. It’s frustrating for her, our family, and I’m sure her teacher too. I feel like the work is too difficult for her. It’s like the work keeps getting harder when she hasn’t mastered the “easier” stuff. It seems to me that until she has some mastery at a lower level, it’s not doing much but stressing her out to keep advancing. She goes to a tutor at a local church for an hour one night a week to take a bit off of us (it takes forever to get through homework and all of the make up stuff from the daily school work). We have thought of taking her to Sylvan learning center or someplace, but I know we can’t afford it. What can we do? What can we ask of the school? Thanks for any advice!

Right… what were those test results?
Something’s very wrong with this picture… and it doesn’t look like retention would be the solution, though that’s impossible to tell through cyberspace.
results
we are in the process of moving so the actual results are packed away. What I do remember was that she scored at about a 5 year olds level. I never had the test nor the results explained to me. What I received was a piece of paper in the mail that showed her results (again I wish I could be more clear on this) and that no further action was necessary. I asked her teacher what this meant. (No further action but yet she’s behind?) She said it meant that she didn’t qualify for the “resource center” which is a program that she would go to for an hour a day during class time. She said the resource program is for kids who are behind on one subject (not all the way across the board). I will be talking to her teacher in the next couple of days as failing notices just came out. I feel clueless on what I should be asking them to do. In all honesty I don’t thing anything would’ve been done had I not said something in the begining. This isn’t anything new with her…things just don’t “click”. I was told she probably got through Kindergarden (which she struggled with) because if they’re going to be retained, it’s better to do it in first (rather than kindergarden) because of the reading.
Is there a specific test I should be asking for?
Re: help! Could it be a LD? Advice please!
Until we see what testing has already done, it is impossible to suggest what to request next. Once you can access the paperwork, you can post the scores here and we can try to help you. I would not recommend Sylvan for a child with a potential learning disability, so hang on to your money until we can see your test results. Perhaps you can ask the school for an extra copy since your papers are packed.

As soon as I find out what the test was, and the scores I’ll post them!
Thanks!
Sarah,
What testing was done and what were the scores?
