Hi all, I am new here. My son is 8 and has a lot of behavior problems. I have continually thought he might have some learning problems but because of his behaviors and how he tested 2 years ago, the school doesn’t think so. They are getting ready to retest him. Thank goodness! But, his teacher is continually telling me that he refuses to work independently. I think this has something to do with a learning disability. Has anyone else ever heard of this? We are also having him tested for auditory processing problems which I have always felt is a problem but the school has never tested him for it. Thanks in advance to all!! I’m so glad I found this site!!!
Yes, LDs could be part of the problem but you may also want to look into anxiety issues. My dd has many LDs which means she often needs more help but now that she is doing better she still has trouble working independently because she is anxious that she won’t do it right or that she can’t do it on her own. We are gradually reducing the amount of help she is getting so that she can see her own success and gain some confidence in her ability to do it herself. There are still days when she needs more help but she is seeing much more success in herself and what she can do.
Along with the school testing I would recommend an evaluation by a psychiatrist or psychologist outside the school to see if there are other issues interfering with his ability to independently work at school and possibly look into the other behavior issues he is having.
