New to ADHD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We are in the first stages after our son 8yrs old has just been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. We still need to decide about medication/IEP. Seems overwhelming. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello. Welcome to the site. I would first explore this site, looking under both the ADHD and LD basics and the parents’ section. But additionally, you have to decide if medication is best for your child. Often, kids with ADHD will try several different medications before findng the one that works. Other parents opt for natural remedies, fish oil supplements, behavior management, therapy or some combination of these. As for the IEP, the threshold question will be: does the ADHD/LD interfere with the learning? If so, a 504 plan or IEP is a likely choice. Many people who are able opt to put their kids in a private school or homeschool to avoid the special education odyssey. It’s quite a journey, but it can be very helpful for your child.

At this point, you will need to be your child’s biggest advocate, which means you’ll need to stay on the school’s case. Also, do an internet search for ADHD sites with supportive message boards. Good luck, and know you’re not alone.
