help ???

Hi i am a student in college and i would like to find a parent in CA that has a child with a LD. They should be school age and there are only 15 ?’s that i need answered if u have the time and are willing to help i would appreciate it let me know?

hi
I’m also in college doing project on LD, i thought if you hadn’t already found someone, maybe you could go to a local school and see if any of the students and parents there would be interested. Hope this helps, goodluck

My son is now in college, so I am answering these questions from our 7th grade experience.

1) My Name: Debbie
2) Name of person interviewed:Debbie; Name of child: Yuji; age 12, and grade 7:
3) At what age did your child begin receiving special education services? He never received special services, although I did work with his councelor on class and teacher choices. Disabilities? Synapses from right and left side of the brain do not fire in synch - manifests as reading, writing, coordination problems. What was/has been the program? formal occupational therapy for a year (3rd grade). Use of computer rather than hand writing wherever possible.
4) Describe your child’s strengths, abilities, and educational needs: Gifted writer from a composition view, very weak from mechanics view. Gifted problem solver. Very creative with lots of wild ideas. Although he is dyslexic he has compensated on his own and reading is no longer a problem. The major educational problems are low self-esteem in his strong areas since all tests are given with a pencil, and not much that develops his strong areas.
5) Explain how the school has been supportive in providing a quality program: The school has no formal program. The school has been helpful in finding and assigning the best classes for him and the best teachers for him. They have been excellent about accepting homework done on a computer - math being the major exception and current biggest problem - he is good at math but not good with a pencil.
6) How would you change your child’s school or program? Introduce a mentoring program so strengths can be developed (this would also help self esteem). Provide alternatives to “pencil and paper tests” - oral or computerized. Educate the teachers so that rather than continually telling a child he is not working up to his potential, they would recommend to the parents that the child be tested for learning disabilities.
7) Describe any modifications you have made at home or in the community: Always made sure there was a computer available for his use. Lots of educational games.
8) What is your child’s attitude about school? He dislikes school, has social problems, and is purposefully disruptive when expected to do work with a pencil.
9) Would you like to share a goal your child has recently accomplished? He accomplished his own personal goal of failing 7th grade on purpose. (he had a B+ average in 8th grade).
10) Do you have any suggestions or advice for teachers or other staff? When a child is not working up to his potential and being disruptive consider that there may be a learning disability involved.
11) Is there any other information you would like to share? He opted for a community college where he is doing quite well (B+ - A- average) and expects to go on to a 4 year college. He is no socially well accepted and well adjusted. His self esteem is finally intact.
