New bie with question about Reading 180 program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,

My name is Michell and I have just discovered this wonderful board. There is soooo much useful information.

I have an 11 yo daughter who after 2 years of fighting with the school we finally had her psychological exam. She was found to have a very high IQ, but problems with decoding and processing. The school initially suggested the Linda Mood-Bell program through a Speech Pathologist, but what I have found is that they tend to only want to use this program on younger children.

Our school has a program called the Reading 180 program. I have tried to do some research on line, but would really like to talk to someone who has actually used this program. Can anyone help me?

Again, this is a great site!

Thanks, Michell

I LOVE READ 180!!!!!

My dd has used just about every program out there and this is the ONLY school program she has had success with. It is broken down into 3 segments of 20 - 40 minutes each. They work on a computer program which helps with reading, spelling and vocabulary. Next they do independent reading from a variety of books. The third segment is small group work where they work on a variety of different things with the teacher.

I’ve also talked with other students who have used this program at the high school level. One student I talked with started the program in 9th grade with a 2nd grade reading level. She told me that by the end of the year she was reading at nearly grade level.

Our district only uses the program at the high school level for both LD students and ELL students. I truly wish that we could have used this program much earlier because it would have made such a significant difference in what my dd could accomplish. I’m a huge fan of this program!

scifinut’s experience is in the minority. Most people report fairly weak results with Read 180.
If your daughter really has weak decoding, a *good* Lindamood Bell program is the way to go. All programs can be implemented well or poorly, but if you can get a knowledgeable teacher who will work appropriately with an older student, LMB would be a very good choice.
