Brainbuilder Question

HI All,

For those of you who have used Brainbuilder, I have a few questions.

After you stopped the program, was your child able to maintain the gains from the program? In other words, if your child was able to sequence 10 and then you stopped, would your child still remain at this level.

I am trying to understand if Brainbuilder actually makes permament changes or if you have to have a maintance program in order to not loose the benefits (and throw all that hard work in the garbage!).

Can you remind me again what brainbuilder is? Is it for auditory memory? I think you had mentioned digit span and I read that people ages 7-adult have an average digit span of 7. Is that what you mean by level 7 or is that totally unrelated?

For my dd it did stick. She reached level 7 when she was 6.5. We didn’t touch it again until she was in 5th grade (age 11) and much to my surprise she easily hit 7 on her first try, on all tasks.

Before TV the average auditory digit span was around 10. This has been determined by the way speeches and letters were written. Today’s speeches consist of very short sentences with simple vocabulary. Before the TV age, speeches had long winding sentences with very high vobulary. Just food for thought.

Yes, Level 7 means you can retain 7 digits both auditorily and visually. It’s the average level for age 7- adult.

Brainbuilder is a Computer SW program that you use 15min. 2x per day and helps build you digit span both auditorily and visually (you even have to be able to repeat it backwords). It’s pretty boring. We had to implement a ‘bonus’ structure to get our dd to do it. We gave her spare change of penny, nickel, dime, quarter depending on her levels of success. She not only increased her digit span, but she learned how to count change!

I looked at the site that sells Brainbuilder.

They also sell the cd-rom
“Shelly’s - My First Computer Game”.

Has anyone tried that? I’m looking for cognitive skills and memory enhancement.
