Retention/state test taking issues

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a 13 yr old daughter who does well on a day to day basis in school, and reads, BUT… When it comes to taking the school State and district test, she fails them. The school is concerned that she is not retaining what she’s learned from early school yrs. Does anyone have suggestions of what I can do?
Any help is greatly appreciated. I don’t know if she has a learning disability or not. I’m concerned she won’t pass the new high school exit exam and graduated with her peers. Pleas help if you have any information. Thank you.

Thanks, frustrated mom

I know for both my kids that if there is a narrow period of time to take the test, the stress makes knowledge retrieval more difficult. If they have unlimited time to take the test then they do better.

Maybe requesting more time, a quiet/private place to test could help her. How does she do with class tests?

She does ok on test on chapter test, but we sit down together and review everything for a few days. When it comes to unit tests, it’s too much for her to absorb and therefore doesn’t do as well even though we do sit and review and she seems to know the material, just that I think words get turned around and she has to think broader and the material more in a grey scale than black and white. Thank you for your reply. I will be talking with the counselor when they go back to school after Christmas break. Any additional assistance would be helpful. Thank you
