Auditory Processing Disorder Question

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

note: I realize nobody can make an accurate diagnosis online, however I feel there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum.

OK so I am a 17 year old boy in California. I was diagnosed two years ago with ADD and put on meds which helped a lil (eventually though i had to be taken off due to side effects).

Recently, I came across APD information (coincident?) and a lot of it made sense but some did not. I am not a struggling student (if I can do so humbly, I am pretty smart!) but I do have some things that really clicked with APD’s symptoms:
1) I am extra sensitive to certain noises to the point that I feel kinda trapped in certain environments (loud).
2) I always watch the TV on Closed Captioning as I find it very difficult to follow otherwise.
3) I often am in the situation where something was told to me, but I have to say “what” because I dunno it’s like I didn’t hear.

And I don’t know if it is relevant - but I had chronic ear infections as a baby, eventually having tubes placed in my ears at age 3.

Does it sound like APD?

Thank you all for your help/time!

I think it sounds like a possibility worth more exploration. My dd has APD and she used to say “what” to just about everything. :) She has gotten therapy for auditory integration and that helped tremendously. She is now less sensitive to noisy areas but still doesn’t like them.

http://www.exploratorium.edu/exhibits/ladle/index.html - this site gives a visual of what some APD sufferes hear. It might help you.

Good luck!

Agree. Most important of course is what you are already doing - figuring out things that work for you and bring out your best (and being able to anticipate when there will be problems that ordinarily you wouldn’t expect).
