Roller Coaster Grades

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is nine in the third grade and he has a learning disability. He was diagnosed as being severly developemently delayed. I am so worried about him because we have moved to another state and this curriculum is a little bit more difficult and he is struggling so badly. His grades dropped this present quarter but his math went up. I just don’t know what to do. He has the hardest time being able to read and comprehend what he reads. I wish I could get him extra help, but I can’t afford it. I don’t know if I should put him back in a regular special ed class or what? I don’t even know how to explain things to him to help him understand.

I’d get together with the teacher and principal and see what changes you can make so that he is not struggling so much. Every school is a little different and you don’t want to wait until he’s totally frustrated. There may be things that the school can do that haven’t been set up yet.
