Last week I started working with five kindergartners who did not pass the PALS (Phonological Wareness Literacy Screening). I have only worked on the letters M, S and B. We’ve spent a lot of time on the letter M. I was reviewing these letters with each child and one of the girls told me the letter M was the letter M. Good, so far. Then she told me that the letter S was the letter M. She also told me that the letter B was the letter M.
Two of the children are way ahead of the others. The other two knew what the three letters were. I do not know why this other girl is having so much difficulty.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. E-mail me at [email protected].
Thank you!
Margo
Re: Child having difficulty learning letter names
Sorry to see they are so concerned about names of letters at this point. Eventually children need to learn them but I don’t think it helps early reading skills, in fact may work against them.

I previously posted a long outline about a method of teaching letters. Please email me at [email protected] and I’ll send you a copy (ask either for just the letter lessons or the whole package of posts/book in progress).
